Tips to save energy at home
Published: 07/09/2026
As the nights draw in, you might already be switching lights on earlier than usual, and thinking about energy bills. There are some small practical changes you can make now to improve your home's energy efficiency, and head into autumn with a warmer home and lower bills:
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat from escaping through the windows. Check for draughts around windows and doors that let cold air in and warm air out, and block them.
- Don’t leave appliances on standby, or laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily.
- Pop lids on pans when you’re cooking on the hob to trap heat - it uses up to 30% less energy.
- Improving the insulation in your home is one way to reduce your energy usage. For guidance on draught-proofing, insulation, and understanding heating systems, visit the Energy Saving Trust website.
- South West London Energy Advice Partnership (SWLEAP) provides free energy advice across Richmond to anyone in fuel poverty.
