RHP part of innovative redevelopment turning hospital wards into family homes

Published: 27/03/2026

South-west London housing provider RHP has completed the handover of 15 affordable homes in Richmond, transforming a Grade II listed hospital building into high-quality homes.

Comprising four shared ownership homes and 11 affordable rented homes, including one wheelchair-adapted property, the scheme forms part of a wider development of 71 homes by developer UKI Richmond. RHP's homes range from one-bedroom to four-bedroom properties, offering a range of affordable housing options, including much needed family size homes.

The conversion has preserved the historic building's character while creating modern, sustainable homes. All properties are well-insulated, with refurbished original sash windows fitted with secondary double glazing to maintain both energy efficiency and the building's heritage features.

Sarah Thomas, RHP's Chief Executive, said: "With housing affordability a growing challenge across London, it’s more important than ever that we make the most of underused sites. By working with UKI Richmond to convert this historic hospital building, we’ve been able to bring more much-needed affordable homes to Richmond while carefully preserving the character of a building that’s part of the area’s history. These homes will give more local people the chance to live in a place they can truly call home.”

London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has supported the development, including granting planning permission.

Councillor Jim Millard, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Finance, added: These are 15 high-quality, genuinely affordable homes for local families. This is about pushing forward with the kind of housing delivery residents expect: practical, high quality and rooted in community need.”

RHP's purpose is providing safe, secure homes - opening the door to life opportunities. Over the past two years, RHP has developed 158 new sustainable, accessible and affordable homes across south-west London.
