Staying gas safe

Published: 13/11/2023

Gas services are a legal requirement, and we need to carry them out every year, to keep you and your family safe. Without one, you could be at serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, or even a fire or explosion. Gas appliances can also become less economical to run if they aren’t serviced annually, costing you more money.

If you've not yet turned your heating on, please test it now, to make sure your boiler is working effectively before the weather gets much colder.

To report a gas or carbon monoxide emergency, or if a pipeline is struck (even if no gas leak has occurred) call 0800 111 999 - 24 hours a day.

What to do when your gas check is due

Smith & Byford carry out gas safety checks on our behalf and will write to you when your gas check is due. You must let them into your home to carry out your gas safety check: but we want to do it at a time that works for you.

If the appointment date or time doesn’t suit you, you can rearrange it by:

  • scanning the QR code on the letter, using the camera on your smartphone,
  • calling 0800 091 2095,
  • or emailing [email protected].

Electrical tests

We need to carry out an electrical check every five years, to make sure your wiring is safe. Smith & Byford will write to you when your check is due.

Just like gas checks, it’s important you let them into your home.
